Wednesday’s Big 10/ACC Tips

This season’s ACC vs. Big Ten Challenge in men’s college basketball wraps things up this Wednesday night with the final six matchups of the series including a couple of big games involving No. 3 Michigan State for the Big Ten and No. 7 Duke for the ACC. The early results have this year’s showdown tied in a dead-heat with each conference claiming four wins over the last two days.
No. 24 Louisville Cardinals at No. 3 Michigan State Spartans – 7:15 p.m. ESPN
Betting Pointspread: Michigan State -5 ½
The Cardinals moved to 5-0 on the year straight-up with a 77-57 romp over St. Louis this past Saturday as 15-point favorites in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational. It was just their second game this season with a posted point-spread and they covered in both as double-digit favorites. Senior guard Damion Lee has led the way with 17.4 points per game with both senior guard Trey Lewis (12.4 PPG) and sophomore guard Quentin Snider (10.0) scoring in double figures.
Michigan State just completed a successful three-game run to win the Wooden Legacy Tournament with SU double-digit victories against Boston College, Boise State and Providence. The only game the Spartans failed to cover in was last Friday’s 77-67 win against Boise State as 10 ½-point favorites. Senior guard Denzel Valentine tallied a total of 78 points in that three-game span to raise his team-scoring average to 19.9 PPG.
Louisville is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six games against the Big Ten, but it falls to 4-9-2 ATS in its last 15 games played outside the ACC. The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against a team from the ACC and they have covered in six of their last seven home games.
These two met in the Elite 8 of last season’s NCAA Tournament with Michigan State coming away with the 76-70 victory in overtime as a two-point favorite. The total went OVER the closing 127 ½-point line.
Indiana Hoosiers at No. 7 Duke Blue Devils – 9:15 p.m. ESPN
Betting Pointspread: Duke -9
Indiana has jumped out to a SU 5-2 start with a 3-4 record ATS. This past Monday, the Hoosiers rolled over Alcorn State 112-70 to cover a huge 35 ½-point spread at home. The total easily went OVER the 154 ½-point line and it has gone OVER in two of their last three games. Junior guard James Blackmon Jr. put up 33 points in Monday’s win and on the year he leads Indiana with 17 PPG while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 48.9 percent from three-point range.
Duke is off to a 6-1 SU start with the lone loss coming against No. 1 Kentucky in a 74-63 loss on Nov. 17 as a 1 ½-point road underdog. The Blue Devils have covered in their last two games in wins against a Yale and Utah State after failing to cover in their previous four outings with a posted betting line. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games. Duke has four players scoring in double figures led by sophomore guard Grayson Allen with an average of 22.6 PPG.
The Hoosiers have failed to cover in four of their last five games against a team from the ACC and they are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games against a team with a SU winning record. Duke’s current ATS winning streak against the Big Ten stands at six games and it is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 games at home.
The last time these two met was in 2006 with Duke squeezing-out a 54-51 win as a heavy 13-point home favorite.
Wisconsin Badgers at No. 14 Syracuse Orange (-6) – 7:15 p.m. ESPN2
The 4-3 Badgers have failed to cover in their last five games and they are 1-6 ATS on the year. Syracuse is off to a perfect 6-0 start SU with a 3-2 record ATS and the total has gone OVER in four its last five games.
Penn State Nittany Lions at Boston College Eagles (-2) – 7:15 p.m. ESPNU
The 3-2 Nittany Lions are 1-3 ATS in four games with a posted point-spread this season and they go on the road with a SU 3-10 record in their last 13 road games. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 10 road games. Boston College is 3-3 SU with a 1-3 record ATS. It has a 6-1 SU record in its last seven home games.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-2 ½) at Illinois Fighting Illini – 9:15 p.m. ESPN2
The 4-2 Fighting Irish have a 1-3 record ATS this season, but they have covered in five of their last six road games. The total has stayed UNDER in their last five games on the road. The 3-4 Fighting Illini are 3-2 ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those games.
Florida State Seminoles at Iowa Hawkeyes (-5) – 9:15 p.m. ESPNU
The 4-1 Seminoles have failed to cover in three of the five games, but they go on the road with profitable 8-1 record ATS in their last nine road games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of Florida State’s last six road games. Iowa has won four of its first six games SU with a 3-3 mark ATS. The total has gone OVER in three of its last four games.
