11:20 am arizona diamondbacks at chicago cubs
godley back up to face lester, cubs
zack godley was a chicago cub this past off season. he was dealt to the diamondbacks and today he starts against the cubs. they may wish they never traded him. this season godley has gone 4-0 with a 1.90 era. godley was brought up and started 3 games for the d-backs in late july and early august. they reluctantly sent him down to double-a due to innings concerns. he was recalled again to make a pair of relief appearances and back to the hill he goes today. between visalia and mobile, godley is 10-4 with a 2.71 era in the minor leagues. lester has 3 previous starts against the d-backs. he’s 1-0 with a 4.91 era/ paul goldschmidt is expected to miss the game to be with his wife who is about to have the couple’s first child. the cubs and lester opened at -245 but have been bet down closer to -200.
4:10 pm ny mets at miami marlins
mets hope to take advantage of koehler’s slump
when looking at tom koehler’s record for the 55-79 miami marlins, you’d expect to find it about where it is. koehler is 8-13 this season with a 4.27 era. one of his problems tomorrow is that he has to go up against jacob de grom. de grom is 12-7 with a 2.32 era. koehler’s other problem is that he has had a rough august that he hopes doesn’t slip into september. in his last 3 starts koehler is 0-3 with a 7.72 era. in his last 16 1/3 innings he has been knocked around for 14 runs and 25 hits. 5 of those 25 left the ballpark. koehler also hasn’t had much success against the mets going 1-5 with a 4.61 era. de grom, on the other hand, is 3-0 against the fish with a 1.32 era. in one start against miami this year at home, de grom shut them out for 7 innings on 6 hits. the mets are sitting around -180.
4:10 pm milwaukee brewers at cincinnati reds
runs may not be scarce here
no doubt tickled pink at their unexpected sweep of the pittsburgh pirates, the milwaukee brewers travel to cincinnati for a weekend series. if the pitchers are any indication, you may see some runs scored here. the brewers are sending matt garza to the bump. garza is a very uninspiring 5-14 this season with a 5.83 era. garza is even worse on the road where his era is 6.50. but that pales in comparison to his last 3 starts. garza has been rocked for 19 runs and 27 hits in his last 13 1/3 innings. his era for the last 3 is 12.82. keyvius sampson goes for the reds and someone must have cut his hair a month ago because like garza, he too has been horrendous of late. he’s 2-2 with a 6.67 era over all. he’s been significantly worse at home where he is 0-2 with an 8.76 era. finally, in his last 3 starts, sampson has given up 14 runs and 25 hits in just 11 innings! his era for the last 3 starts is 11.45. the reds opened at -125 with a total of ………………9!
5:40 pm san francisco giants at colorado rockies
dodgers, now rockies, keep giants out of playoffs
getting swept by the dodgers did serious damage to the giants chances at a playoff berth. so the giants limped into colorado 6.5 games behind the dodgers. it looked like the place where a down trodden team could flourish. last time i looked the rockies were up 9-2. things may not get any better for the giants tomorrow when jorge de la rosa goes to the bump for the rockies. for one, de la rosa has a positive record against sf. in 25 career games versus los gigantes, de la rosa is 9-6 with a 3.80 era. his team has won 14 and lost 8 in his starts against sf. he looks poised to deliver some more pain to the reeling giants. de la rosa is 8-6 with a 4.40 era this season. but the veteran lefty is gradually improving. in his last 3 starts, jorge has gone 1-1 with a 2.37 era. i of his last 3 starts came at coors where he shut out the nationals on 4 hits through 6 innings. the rockies also claim a 16-10 record against the giants the past 3 years at coors. the rockies opened at -105 but the giants quickly jumped to -115 favorites.
