STEVE MERRIL

Boise State (-1.5, 49) at Virginia (8 pm ET, ESPN)

My power ratings would have made Boise State a 4.5-point favorite in this game at Virginia, but with the quarterback issues for the Broncos, the line is currently 3 points less. Boise State will start true freshman Brett Rypien at quarterback after losing starter Ryan Finley last week to a broken ankle. Rypien was highly recruited and is the nephew of former NFL QB Mark Rypien, so the true freshman comes with high expectations, but this will be a tough test for him, especially since the game will be on the road in Virginia against a pretty good defensive front.

Virginia comes into this game with a 1-2 SU record, but the Cavaliers played brutal back-to-back games against two opponents who are undefeated. Virginia lost at UCLA and at home to Notre Dame, and last week the Cavaliers were in a monumental flat spot at home against William & Mary. The Cavaliers survived that game 35-29 as a 22-point favorite, but it is a result that can be largely dismissed because of the poor situational spot.

It is hard to know what to expect from Boise State’s quarterback play tonight, and because of that, this game is difficult to handicap on Friday night.
