    NIT
    BYU scored 88.3 ppg in winning its three NIT games;
with all three tilts at home. Cougars are 12-4 outside WCC- they’ve won four of last five games away from home. Valparaiso is 13-2 outside Horizon; they won last five road games, last of which was 29 days ago. Valpo has #6 eFG% defense; they’re #31 experience, play slow tempo. BYU plays fast, #11 tempo. Horizon teams are 2-1 vs WCC clubs this year; all three games were decided by 6 or less points.

San Diego State is 21-3 since a 7-6 start that cost them an at-large spot in NCAAs; Aztecs are young team with best eFG% defense in country- they’re 5-1 in last six games away from home. George Washington won 14 of 16 outside A-14, but vs #238 non-conference schedule. Colonials scored 83.7 ppg in winning first three NIT games, with impressive win at Monmouth. Both teams play slowish tempo. Aztecs made 22-48 on arc in last three games; if they shot like that in non-conference schedule, they wouldn’t be in this tournament.

Gauchos played couple starters 32:00+; ODU used only one kid more than 28:00. These two leagues (C-USA/Big West) split two games this season.

Oakland is 11-3 in last 14 games; they ran Towson St off floor Monday, going 31-39 on line. 5-9 PG Felder dominated game. Grizzlies play #9 tempo in country, but East Tennessee State will run with them- total in this game will be very high. Bucs are 11-3 in their last 14 games- they’re 9-6 vs #41 non-league schedule. ETSU is #15 experience team, shoots 38.2% on arc (#16)- they were 11-28 on arc last nite. ETSU lost two of three vs top 100 teams, losing by 35-21; they upset Georgia Tech back in November. Preview: Brigham Young vs Valparaiso

When: 7:00 PM ET, Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York

Valparaiso is the only top seed still standing and the Crusaders have their eyes set on reaching the NIT championship game for the first time in school history when they face second-seeded Brigham Young in Tuesday’s semifinals at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Crusaders have set a school record for victories but figure to be tested by the Cougars, who are in the NIT Final Four for the second time in the past four seasons.

BYU often lives – and sometimes dies – by the 3-point shot but coach Dave Rose said his squad can play a slower pace if Valparaiso chooses to go that route. “We have lost 10 games, and in those 10 games we’ve learned a lot about our team,” Rose told reporters at Monday’s NIT banquet. “Hopefully, we like the pace to be quick, but this team has been successful in slow-paced games. We will see how this game goes. I know it will be a battle of each team trying to get to where they feel comfortable.” The Crusaders thoroughly shut down one of the Cougars’ West Coast Conference mates in Saint Mary’s by a 60-44 score to reach the title game and are still drawing motivation from their NCAA Tournament snub. “We’re just trying to go win a championship,” junior forward Jubril Adekoya told reporters. “We have to treat it like any other game. We’ll go out there and go through the same pregame routine.”

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT BYU (26-10): Senior point guard Kyle Collinsworth has recovered from a bout with the flu and the do-it-all player who holds the NCAA record of 12 career triple-doubles is averaging 15.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Senior guard Chase Fischer (18.3 scoring average, 110 3-pointers) and freshman guards Nick Emery (16.2 average, 94 3s) and Zac Seljaas (7.8 points, 67 3s) are proficient long-range shooters and have combined to make 28 3-pointers during the three NIT contests. Junior forward Kyle Davis (12.1 points, 7.4 rebounds) provides a capable inside threat for the Cougars, who outscore their opponents by an average of 11.2 points per game.

ABOUT VALPARAISO (29-6): Junior forward Alec Peters has been a force in NIT play by averaging 24.7 points and eight rebounds in the three games and his season averages stand at 18.5 points and 8.4 rebounds to go with a team-best 87 3-point baskets. Senior center Vashil Fernandez (5.7 points, 7.4 rebounds) is a defensive terror who leads the nation with 111 blocked shots – including efforts of eight and six in the NIT – and holds the Crusaders’ career mark with 281 rejections. Senior point guard Keith Carter (10.3 points, 4.4 assists) runs the offense proficiently for Valparaiso, which outscores opponents by 13.5 per game and also holds a 9.4 rebounding margin edge.

    TIP-INS

    1. The winner faces either San Diego State or George Washington in Thursday’s title contest.

    2. Collinsworth has scored in double digits 98 times in his career.

    3. Peters has scored 20 or more points in seven straight games and ranks fifth in Crusaders history with 1,652 career points.

Preview: George Washington vs San Diego St.

When: 9:00 PM ET, Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York

After opening the NIT with three impressive home wins, No. 2 seed San Diego State heads across the country Tuesday to face fourth-seeded George Washington in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Aztecs rolled past IPFW, Washington and Georgia Tech by a combined 55 points and will need another balanced effort to get past the Colonials, who averaged 83.7 points in wins over Hofstra, Monmouth and Florida.

Forward Winston Shepard is averaging 14.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists over the past seven games for the Aztecs, who held Georgia Tech to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half of last Wednesday’s 72-56 win. “It’s a team that probably is playing in the wrong tournament,” former Yellow Jackets coach Brian Gregory told reporters. “To be honest with you, they deserved to be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Their numbers show it, their record shows it.” The Aztecs figure to be tested by George Washington, which defeated Virginia early in the season but fell to St. Joseph’s in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament. The key matchup Tuesday will be in the frontcourt, where the Colonials’ tandem of Tyler Cavanaugh and Kevin Larsen needs another productive outing against the Aztecs’ athletic trio of Shepard, Skylar Spencer and Malik Pope.

    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON (26-10): Cavanaugh made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points while combining with Larsen to limit Florida big man Dorian Finney-Smith to nine points in last Wednesday’s 82-77 win over the Gators. Cavanaugh is averaging 21.7 points in the NIT on 54.1 percent shooting along with 9.3 rebounds to pace the Colonials, who can tie the 2005-06 team for the most wins in school history with a victory over San Diego State. Forward Patricio Garino is shooting 43.3 percent from 3-point range but faces an Aztecs team that ranks among the nation’s best in defending beyond the arc.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (28-9): The Aztecs hold opponents to a 60.5 scoring average and turned in another strong performance against Georgia Tech as 6-foot-5 guard Dakarai Allen helped limit star Adam Smith to six points. “He’s a great defender,” Smith told reporters. “He’s long, athletic. Most of the shots I took, he was there and it was contested. But it was a team effort. Once we got past one guy, they had another defender there.” Pope is averaging 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in his last eight games for the Aztecs, who have allowed 70 or fewer points in 12 of their last 13 contests.

    TIP-INS

    1. The winner advances to face either Valparaiso or Brigham Young in the NIT championship game on Thursday.

    2. The Aztecs are 26-1 when scoring at least 67 points.

    3. George Washington is 71-11 under fifth-year coach Mike Lonergan when leading at halftime.
