“It’s just Warriors, Warriors, Warriors” in early NBA playoff action
By Patrick Everson
The NBA’s second season tips off today with four playoff games, and as if to prove bettors are eager for postseason festivities to get started, the first contest is seeing a fair amount of movement.
Both the spread and the total have shifted for the best-of-7 opener between the No. 2 seed Toronto Raptors and the No. 7 Indiana Pacers, which has a 12:30 Eastern start.
“We opened Toronto at -6, and now it’s at 6.5,” Jason Simbal, vice president of risk management for CG Technology. “And we saw bets on the over, moving the total from 194 to 196.”
Another Eastern Conference matchup, the 4-5 battle between the Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics (7 p.m. Eastern start), is also drawing plenty of attention at CG books.
“The biggest action of any series so far has come on the Hawks. We opened them at -4.5, and it’s now at -5,” said Simbal, whose company runs Las Vegas sportsbooks at the M, Cosmopolitan and the Palms, among others.
Simbal also noted that the total was on the rise for the 2-7 Western Conference matchup between Oklahoma City and Dallas, moving from 209 to 210.5 for the 9:30 p.m. Eastern tip time.
Over at the South Point, oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro said there was plenty of interest, but not a whole lot of movement on the lines or totals in today’s games.
“There’s not $2,000 that separates any team right now,” Vaccaro said. “But that shows the numbers are right where they should be.”
That would include the record-setting Golden State Warriors laying 13 in their opener against the eighth-seeded Houston Rockets (3:30 p.m. Eastern). Not surprisingly, up north in Reno – where Warriors fans are more prevalent with the proximity to the Bay Area – Golden State is a tick higher at 13.5-point chalk.
“It’s just Warriors, Warriors, Warriors, as far as we’re concerned,” said Terry Cox, director of race and sports for the Peppermill. Cox noted the most alarming trend hasn’t come in line movement, but via his phone. “Every third phone call to my office is, ‘Are you gonna be showing the Warriors game?’ Well, hell yeah we’re gonna be showing the Warriors game.”April 16, 2016 at 10:33 am #40674

Game: Indiana Pacers (501) @ Toronto Raptors (502)
Time: Saturday 04/16 12:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Toronto +6.5 (-103)
Toronto won three of the four meetings this season with Indiana, including 111-98 on April 8 when the Raptors rested four starters and the Pacers were battling for a playoff spot. The Raptors have a clear edge in the backcourt where DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry average a combined 44.7 points and 10.4 assists per game. Also, DeMarre Carroll is back after missing three months with an injury and center Jonas Valanciunas pulls down 9.1 rebounds per game. The Pacers won six of their last seven games, but only one of them was against a team with a winning record. Paul George leads Indiana with a 23.1 scoring average and the Pacers have an improved offense compared to the last few seasons, however, Toronto holds a slight defensive edge allowing 98.2 points per game compared to 100.5 for the Pacers. Toronto will be focused as it remembers last year’s playoff debacle of getting swept by Washington in the first round. Play the Raptors.April 16, 2016 at 11:49 am #40690

What a year the Golden State Warriors had! The best regular season EVER going 73-9 but now the pressure is on. It’s a quick turnaround for Golden State and that helps Houston. These two battled for the Western Conference crown so they know each other well and as much as we respect the Warriors, double digits seems to much to lay here. Golden State was just 2-5 ATS as double digit favorites on their way to the NBA title last season and the get the win but not the cover again today.April 16, 2016 at 11:59 am #40692
