    ‘FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL’

    Akron v. Utah St. (-7/48) 3:30 ESPN

As this line begins to rise, it inches ever closer to a virtually automatic take with a more than TD dog, who could well have the better running game and defense against a 6-6 SU Utah St. favorite, who enters with negative momentum of a (51-23) home loss to BYU to close the season. In fact, the 1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS negative momentum of the Aggies for a .500 finish makes them a team that is hard to trust. On their behalf, explosive but often injured starting QB Keeton returned for the last 2 games. But, he completed only 47% of his passes in those outings. Negatives for Akron include the fact that this is their 1stBowl appearance in a decade and it is much further from Akron to Boise than it is from Logan to Boise. Also favoring the Utes is the fact that they are 3-0 SU ATS in recent Potato Bowl appearances, including the last 2 under current HC Wells. Akron is a team on the “come” with a season-ending finish of 7-1 and 4-0 SU ATS behind offensive triplets QB Woodson, RB Hundley and WR Lane. But the real fact which draws the attention is a rush defense that allows 90/2.8 for the year.

    ‘BOCA RATON BOWL’

    Fau Stadium, Boca Raton, FL

    Toledo v. Temple (-1-/51) 7:00 ET ESPN

There may be more negatives than positives for this pair of defensive-oriented foes which pits a Temple team allowing just 19/329 and a Toledo team allowing 21/379. There may be more potential negatives than positives. Toledo had the Conference Title appearance well in hand after N. Illinois lost 3 nights earlier. But, they choked a home game as 9 point favorite, losing (35-30) to Western, handing the Division Title right back to Northern. Despite that defeat, HC Campbell showed enough in his 4 years at the helm of the Rockets to warrant a call from Big 12 member Iowa St. Maybe, they were impressed with the Rockets’ victory at Arkansas or the fact they defeated Iowa St. the week after that upset victory by a count of 30-23 in Ohio. In any event, he is toast (replaced for this contest by former OC Canole). What the Rockets do have, to complement their fine defense, is offensive triplets of Alabama transfer QB Ely, who had a 21/10 ratio and was complemented by a pair of runners in Hunt and Swanson, who averaged a combined 6.0 YPR. Temple counters with the coaching of Rhule. The Owls with 19 RS were good enough to upset Penn St. in the opener and cover against Top Tier teams, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Memphis. Coming off an AAC Title game loss to Houston (24-13) should provide plenty of motivation. Their QB Walker played virtually mistake-free football and had a 16/5 ratio L10 games. But, before you take off the rubber band, note that it is a major negative to back Bowl virgins off a blowout loss in their previous contest.

And as I release this play at 5 a.m. pacific, the line is +7. And as long as your Bookmaker is offering you anywhere between +6′ and +7 with this underdog, I want you buying the half point up on this one.

Jason Candle was named head coach for Toledo after Matt Campbell left to take over the head job at Iowa St. Candle was the offensive coordinator for the Rockets and if anyone has motivation to win, it’s Coach Candle. He inherits a team that was undefeated (5-0) on the road. Toledo ended up on a sour note losing in the MAC Championship game 35-30 to a very talented Western Michigan team. They get to meet 10-3 Temple. But there’s more to their record that needs to be addressed. Temple began the season 8-1 and had the nation excited and wondering about the Owls. After studying tape and exposing some weaknesses, the Owls finished just 2-2 down the final stretch. Temple lost by 3 touchdowns to South Florida and then managed just 13 points against Houston. The way to upset Temple is by rushing Kareem Hunt and Terry Swanson play after play. The opposite holds true for Temple. While they like to run the ball, the Rockets were very strong in 2015 against the run, finishing 11th in rushing yards allowed per game at 115.5 per contest. That’s checkmate in this game. The players will
