SIDE Bet For NFL Week 9 GOTW
Some have called me an underdog story, so I’m a softie when it comes to one. Although in the case of the Green Bay -vs- Carolina tilt that headlines Week 9 in the NFL, I’m not sure if the underdog tag can be used. A pair of NFC Division leaders are set to square off with the undefeated home team Panthers a 3-point “underdog”. Keep reading and I’ll tell you who I think is the safest bet for this NFC tilt.
The Green Bay Packers (6-1, 5-2 ATS) make the journey to play the Carolina Panthers (7-0, 5-2 ATS) after suffering their first loss of the season last week at the hands of the Denver Broncos. QB Aaron Rodgers had arguably the worst game of his career versus the Broncos, throwing for only 77 yards and no touchdowns.
The Broncos defense was relentless all night, with the Packers offensive line unable to contain the Denver pass rush. Although Rodgers was only sacked three times, he was hit seven times and felt pressure all night.
Carolina withstood a late surge from Andrew Luck and the Colts offense to hold on to keep their record unblemished in Week 8. The Panthers took a 23-6 lead with 10+ minutes remaining in the game, only to watch Luck engineer three straight scoring drives for 17 unanswered points to send the game into overtime.
After the two exchanged OT field goals, my boy Luke Kuechly intercepted an Andrew Luck pass on the Indy 38 yard line setting up a 52 yard Graham Gano field goal to keep them a perfect 7-0. For the record, Kuechly is on my fantasy team and I was down by 25 points going into the Monday nighter with all other players finished. He scored 26.5 points to pull out the much needed win! Told ya I’m rollin’!
When GB plays Carolina this weekend, it’ll mark the second consecutive week they will be facing an undefeated opponent. Even though the Panthers have a perfect record, they haven’t looked perfect doing it. Besides the fourth quarter breakdown against the Colts, they needed a late score to beat Seattle in Week 6 and have won by 11 or less in five of their 7 wins.
Carolina currently rank 19th in offensive yards per game with 349.1 but are 4th in points/game with 27.3. On the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers rank 10th allowing 342.6/game and 19.4 points per game. Green Bay are a slightly better when looking at points per game, giving up 18.6, good for 6th place but rank 23rd in yards/game with 375.7. The Aaron Rodgers led Packers offense scores a 10th best 24.9 points per game but are a surprising 28th with 332.1 yards/game.
This game is going to go a long way in determining who the powerhouses are in the NFC. Is Carolina as good as their record? Is Green Bay as bad as they looked last week in Denver? We won’t get a perfect picture after this Week 9 heavyweight bout, but it will help clear some questions. Take the Green Bay Packers on a moneyline side bet at -140.
